Now that it’s September, let’s talk about what’s in season and why it matters. Eating fruits and vegetables that are in season has a few big benefits. You naturally get more variety in your diet instead of eating the same few things every day. Fruits and veggies picked at their peak are fresher, tastier, and often sweeter or more flavorful. They also keep more nutrients, like vitamins and antioxidants, compared to items that have been stored for a long time or shipped from far away. Buying seasonal produce usually means supporting local farmers too.
Bringing your kids to a farmers market is a great way to show them where food comes from and get them excited about trying new things. The easiest way to see what’s in season near you is to check out your local farmers market. You can find one here: localharvest.org.

Apples, pears, grapes, figs, plums, peaches, blackberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, watermelon
Vegetables
Tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini, summer squash, cucumbers, corn, carrots, beets, eggplant, green beans, leafy greens like spinach, kale, and arugula, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, pumpkins, winter squash
