Mon-Fri Seasonal Recipes + Grocery Shopping List: February Week 1
Golden Chicken Noodle Soup, Honey Dijon Salmon, and Garlic Butter Steak Bites for a Cozy February Dinner Plan...
It’s been a staying-inside kind of week over here. Yesterday Anthony took the hardest fall I’ve ever seen walking to the car. There was this patch near our driveway that looked exactly like cement, totally harmless, until you stepped on it and realized it was basically a skating rink. The kids were already inside, and we’d been so careful not to let them walk near the ice by our house, but of course Anthony is the one who goes down. He’s completely fine, but we stood there laughing for a bit after. We’re still chipping away at house projects too, so if you missed the update on what we’ve done so far including Poppy and Elliott’s room with all the links to the items used, check it out here.
Yesterday was also our first time out on the roads since the ice and we went estate sale shopping. I was looking for a storage cupboard for the playroom, something for art supplies and smaller toys. We found this for $200 and I thought it was a great price for a solid wood piece.
Then I got home and started researching why the tin was painted the way it was and came to find out it's from the 1800s and it's called a pie safe. They're old cupboards with punched tin panels that allowed air to circulate while keeping flies out of baked goods. I sent pictures and video to an antique restorer and he confirmed it was all original! 150+ years old for $200. I love knowing a piece of history is in our house now. Anthony is actually on his way right now to pick up another piece, circa 1900, that we think will be perfect for another part of the house. The craftsmanship you get for a great price is so amazing! I've really tried to be intentional when I go and not come home with random junk, keeping focus on what I'm actually looking for. Next week I'll be writing a post on how to search for estate sales near you and scroll through the pictures beforehand to see if they're worth visiting.
This week the meals are comforting, some of it’s slow cooker, and nothing is spicy by default, though each recipe has an easy way to add heat at the table if you want it. The menu includes a slow cooker golden chicken noodle soup, honey Dijon salmon with crispy smashed potatoes, a creamy cheddar cauliflower and broccoli soup that’s hearty enough to stand alone, garlic butter steak bites with parmesan rice, and a rich Mexican-style beef and black bean stew that is thick, filling, and perfect for leftovers.
